G2 AEO Insights: Does G2 Really Influence ChatGPT Recommendations?

Does G2 influence ChatGPT? cover illustration

G2 AEO insights is not a separate G2 product you can buy. It is shorthand for what G2 reviews and G2 data reveal about whether AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend your software. The data says G2 is among the most cited sources in ChatGPT answers, which makes it worth your attention. It does not prove that more reviews cause more recommendations. This post separates what is measured from what is guesswork, then gives you a ten-minute test to run on your own category.

Key takeaways

  • In a Profound study of about 680 million citations (August 2024 to June 2025), G2 was the fourth most cited domain in ChatGPT, at 1.1% of citations.
  • G2 was lower on Perplexity (0.6%) and absent from Google AI Overviews’ top lists in that study.
  • Brands present on review sites are cited more often, but the evidence is correlation, not proof of cause.
  • G2’s own AI-visibility dashboard is powered by Profound, a company that sells AI visibility tools, so treat its framing as vendor information.
  • You can check your own category in about ten minutes without paying for anything.

What “G2 AEO insights” actually refers to

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of making your content easier for AI assistants to find, trust and cite. “G2 AEO insights” is what people search when they want to know how G2, the software review marketplace, fits into that. Two things sit behind the phrase.

First, on 11 September 2025, G2 and Profound announced a partnership. Profound’s AI visibility data is shown inside the my.G2 dashboard, so software vendors can see how often G2 is cited in AI answers, which G2 categories drive those citations, and how they compare with competitors. Second, many marketing blogs use the phrase for a manual method: reading G2 badges, reviews and comparison pages to guess why an AI recommends one product over another. Both are useful, but neither is a G2-run ranking factor you can read directly.

What the data shows about G2 and AI citations

G2 and Profound announcement (Sep 2025)G2 says it is the most cited B2B software source across LLMs: 4th on ChatGPT and 9th on Perplexity.Claim by G2, the party that benefits.
SE Ranking via a 5W synthesis (Q1 2026)Brands on multiple review platforms averaged 4.6 to 6.3 ChatGPT citations versus 1.8 for brands with none.Correlation across 129K domains. Not causal.
Passionfruit via the same synthesisBrands with G2, Capterra, Trustpilot or Yelp profiles show about 3x the citation probability. The 3x covers all four platforms, not G2 alone.

Read together, the picture is consistent: G2 is a frequently cited source in software-related answers, and brands with review profiles tend to be cited more. The 5W report is a synthesis of other studies and did not verify their data, so I am quoting these figures as reported, not as confirmed.

What the data does not show

  • Cause and effect. Established, well-reviewed products may be recommended because they are popular, and they also collect reviews because they are popular.
  • A G2 effect on every platform. The numbers differ by assistant, and Google AI Overviews did not show G2 in its top lists in the Profound study.
  • Current behaviour. The Profound figures end in June 2025. Citation patterns change as the assistants change.
  • A tested review count. I have not found a reliable figure for how many reviews or which badge moves a recommendation.
Three-step test to check whether G2 appears in AI answers for your software category
You can run this test yourself in about ten minutes.

A ten-minute test for your own category

I did not run a set of chatbot prompts for this post, so I will not claim results of my own. The test below lets you gather the evidence yourself for your category.

  1. Pick one product category, for example “email marketing software” or “project management tool”.
  2. Ask each assistant five variations, such as “best [category] software for small business” or “[your product] alternatives”. Use a signed-out or fresh session where you can.
  3. For each answer, note which products are named and which links or sources are cited. Mark whether g2.com is cited.
  4. On G2, look at the category page for each named product: badges, number of reviews, how recent they are, and whether a “[Product] vs [Product]” page exists.
  5. Repeat in a week. If the answers move, you have learned how stable they are.

What to do with the result

These are my own suggestions, drawn from the pattern above and not from a proven formula. If G2 shows up in the cited sources for your category, keep your profile complete and ask real customers for recent, specific reviews. Do not buy or incentivise fake ones. If G2 does not show up, look at what does: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and industry publications also appear in citation studies, and your effort may be better placed there. Whatever you find, make sure your own site has clear, factual pages that answer the category questions directly, because AI assistants also cite sites like yours. Our post on CERT-In and AI agents is a good example of a short, source-led format.

This post reports third-party studies and vendor claims as published. It is not a guarantee of any ranking or citation outcome.

Not necessarily. Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and publications also appear heavily in citation studies, and the mix differs by assistant and category. Test your own category first.
