In a groundbreaking move towards fostering indigenous artificial intelligence (AI), Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal presented ‘Krutrim’ during a launch event in Bengaluru. Developed by Krutrim Si Designs, an AI venture led by Aggarwal, Krutrim is hailed as India’s very own AI model, signifying a significant stride in the country’s AI landscape.
Krutrim, a large language model (LLM), will be available in two classifications: the base Krutrim model and the more powerful Krutrim Pro, set to launch early next year with enhanced problem-solving and task execution capabilities. This endeavor aims to address specific issues in a uniquely Indian context, departing from conventional AI models predominantly trained on Western data.

Key features of Krutrim:
- Understanding 20 Indian languages and generating content in ten of them, including Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, and Telugu.
- Larger support for Indic languages than even GPT-4, showcasing its prowess in linguistic diversity.
- Utilizing a custom tokenizer to interpret various languages and scripts, enhancing accuracy.
- Outperforming other open-source LLMs in industry-standard benchmarks, indicating superior performance.
Krutrim Si Designs, established in April 2023 by Aggarwal and Krishnamurthy Venugopala Tenneti, aims to revolutionize AI applications by providing a platform tailored for Indian cultural relevance and performance levels. The team envisions Krutrim as the cornerstone of India’s AI-first economy, building an entire stack with a distinct Indian identity.
During the event, Aggarwal emphasized the need for a solution designed “from the ground up” for India, aligning with the dream of Viksit Bharat. He envisions Krutrim as a catalyst for India’s AI vision over the next 25 years, defining the future paradigm of the economy and culture. Aggarwal highlighted the importance of creating an AI computing stack that resonates with India’s unique cultural context, fostering productivity, efficiency, and empowerment.
Krutrim’s Availability:
- The base Krutrim model is set to be available next month, allowing users to express interest through their mobile numbers.
- APIs for Krutrim will be launched in February, expanding its accessibility and integration.
