Microsoft is gearing up for a significant refresh of its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lines, with plans to introduce groundbreaking AI-enabled features, improved designs, and cutting-edge silicon. The eagerly anticipated Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 are expected to be unveiled in the spring of 2024, bringing a host of advancements that promise to redefine the landscape of AI-powered computing.

A key highlight of this update is Microsoft’s foray into ARM processors, marking a departure from the previous Intel-centric approach. Both Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 will be available in Intel and Qualcomm flavors, featuring the latest 14th Gen Intel “Meteor Lake” chips and Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series. The move towards ARM is accompanied by dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) in both configurations, underscoring Microsoft’s commitment to accelerating AI-dependent tasks.

The ARM variants, codenamed “CADMUS PCs,” are purpose-built for the upcoming release of Windows, codenamed Hudson Valley. Microsoft is positioning these devices as direct competitors to Apple Silicon-based devices, promising exceptional performance, extended battery life, and robust security features.

For the Surface Pro 10, Microsoft is not only introducing new chips but also enhancing the display experience. Expect improved HDR support, higher maximum brightness, an anti-glare coating, and rounded corners. Interestingly, the company is experimenting with lower-cost models featuring a slightly reduced display resolution, catering to a broader audience.

Additional upgrades for the Surface Pro 10 include NFC support for commercial users, an expanded field of view for the front-facing camera, new color options, and an updated Type Cover with a dedicated Copilot button for quick access to Windows Copilot.

The Surface Laptop 6 is set to undergo a significant design refresh, featuring thinner bezels, rounded corners, and a range of display sizes. Microsoft is also boosting the device’s connectivity with additional ports, including two USB-C, one USB-A, and the Surface Connect for charging. A noteworthy addition is the inclusion of a haptic touchpad and a dedicated button for invoking Copilot, enhancing user experience.

While the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 take center stage in 2024, Microsoft is not stopping there. Plans for a new Surface Laptop Go and a successor to the Surface Laptop Studio 2 are in the pipeline, with expected releases in 2025. The company is also exploring the introduction of an 11-inch model to the Surface Pro lineup, catering to diverse user preferences.

As Microsoft navigates the evolution of its Surface lineup, the focus appears to be on delivering refined, feature-rich devices that integrate seamlessly with the latest advancements in AI technology. While the departure of Panos Panay has raised questions, Microsoft remains committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation with its well-established Surface devices.
