Photoroom, a Paris-based AI photo editing startup, has successfully closed a Series B funding round, raising $43 million. Led by venture capital firms Balderton Capital and Aglaé, along with support from YCombinator, this round brings Photoroom’s total funding to $64 million. The funding will be utilized to further enhance the company’s generative AI capabilities and expand its team.
CEO Matthieu Rouif expressed his enthusiasm for the future, stating, “We are not only increasing the speed of our model but also optimizing for quality, through higher resolution, more detailed images, and a larger training dataset than ever before.”

Photoroom’s collaboration with photographers and image providers worldwide ensures a diverse dataset, crucial for training its AI models. This partnership ensures the responsible and ethical use of images, with consent from the providers.
Despite facing competition from other players in the market such as Picsart and Pixelcut, Photoroom has seen remarkable growth, processing approximately 5 billion images annually and boasting 150 million downloads of its app. Major brands like Shopify, Netflix, and Warner Brothers have integrated Photoroom’s API into their websites to generate product images.
Looking ahead, Photoroom plans to double its current team size of 50 employees by the end of 2024. The company’s commitment to investing in research and development, infrastructure, and talent underscores its dedication to providing innovative solutions in the AI photo editing space.
